A little about Tenacity's history

Many may know Tenacity as an Audacity fork born out of Muse Group's controversial handling of the program by attempting to add telemetry, a new privacy policy, and a contributor license agreement. In response, several forks, including Tenacity, Audacium, and Saucedacity, were made.

Due to the project's own history, the original Tenacity maintainers became burnt out, and thus the project was put on hiatus. On November 26, 2022, however, Saucedacity (a similar project) merged with Tenacity. As a result, Tenacity restarted development using Saucedacity's codebase. Versions of Tenacity prior to this point are now known as tenacity-legacy or "Tenacity Legacy". These versions of Tenacity are (internally) versioned 0.1.0 alpha. Versions produced after the merge was completed start from 1.3.

Shortly after Saucedacity and Tenacity merged, talks were then prompted with the Audacium maintainer to merge Audacium into Tenacity. The end result is the large theme selection in Tenacity's theme preferences, the inspiration of a new theme system for Tenacity 1.4, and the Audacium maintainer becoming a Tenacity maintainer. They are now retired from the project, but they still stick around in our Matrix room. If you see them, be sure to say hi to them.

Migrating from Saucedacity and Audacium to Tenacity is easy, and may be made easier by the fact that Tenacity is more widely packaged than both of those forks. Projects made with those two forks are easily compatible with Tenacity as they share the same project format (AUP3).

For historical reasons, the Saucedacity, Audacium, and origin Tenacity repos still exist, but are archived, and are linked below. If, for some reason, you want to attempt to build either one of those projects, you are advised that those codebases require patches in order to build on modern systems.

If there is any feature not found in Tenacity that are found either in those forks or in Tenacity's original codebase, please open an issue in our issue tracker and we will be glad to discuss it. Pull requests are also welcome!

Note: The original Saucedacity repo technically lives on at our main repo site. If you go back far enough in our issue tracker, you will see some issues reference Saucedacity, some of which are even open. The repo linked below contains the last commit before the final rebranding occurred.
